Some darn good progress

We were able to revisit this amazing December 2022 garden in June 2023 and take updated photos of it! We are so thrilled with the continual progress of this garden, especially after we had “the great freeze” in the winter that totally rocked this landscape just a few weeks after install. Our clients have done an amazing job at keeping up with it and personlizing this space to fit their family and interests perfectly! Read on below to learn more about this fantastic family project in historic Springfield, downtown Jacksonville.

Our first consultation with these eager clients was merely hours after they moved into their newly constructed house in historic Springfield. To expedite the closing and moving process they filled the new yard with appropriate, standard landscaping to legally live in their new house. Within weeks we were able to formulate a plan to deliver a beautiful multi use space that removes almost all the sod and utilized every single square inch for growing food, flowers and permaculture adventures for this young family.

This landscape is defined by a bold crushed limestone path. We utilized a new edging system that allows us to create beautiful curves with a durable material that is made entirely from recycled materials. This path creates geometry throughout the backyard and organically divides the space into several unique regions. This design was inspired by horticultural conservatories and botanical gardens where unique plant ecosystems are on display in beautiful well maintained gardens. We used Florida/pollinator friendly perennials to create boundaries between the different areas in preventing any unnecessary formality. Perhaps the greatest part of this design is YOU CAN EAT EVERYTHING.

The foundation of this landscape includes our favorite low maintenance plants. By blending in a variety of edibles our clients main maintenance will be picking food! That being said, our client’s young family is eager to kick this yard into food overdrive with the addition of 4 big raised beds. This family is at the steering wheel when it comes to how much maintenance they want to take on.

We were able to utilize several of our favorite plants and elements in this project. We found 4 beautifully massive fruit trees (Chickasaw plum, Yoshino Cherry, Loquat and dwarf Muhlberry) to create a lush food jungle along their stark new privacy fence. We created a beautiful urban citrus orchard using beautiful 24”x48” Corten steal planters from Veradek. In the front yard we built beautiful Florida friendly pollinator garden around a no maintenance ‘Cowboy’ perennial peanut yard. Lastly we gave the client a 750sqft area to fill with enough vegetables to feed the neighborhood. We are truly excited to watch this yard explode with growth in the coming months.
