Whimsical woodland garden on Dr. Inlet

This project represents a common story for our clients. A beautiful home in a beautiful neighborhood with a yard that needed a major refresh. As with all things in this world landscapes have a lifespan. After decades of growth and pruning, shrubs and other foundational plants grow out of scale and weigh the landscape down visually. Our goal with this project was to build a fresh, unique landscape around the useful existing elements that our clients were excited to come home to!

This landscape features several large trees which provides highly variable light conditions. This creates the perfect conditions for our signature woodland garden. Our woodland gardens feature plants that can handle a wide variety of light conditions such as camellias, azaleas, dwarf podocarpus and gardenias. In the areas with higher light conditions we planted groupings of drift roses, blue flag iris and cepholotaxus drupacea. We also used these high light specimens in a full sun garden along the driveway. We used two large Arborquina olives as foundations and filled the area with drift and heirloom roses, Carissa ‘emerald blanket’, Firebush ‘firefly’, Texas Sage and tons of butterfly friendly perennials.

We removed tons of high maintenance over sized shrubs and replaced them with a pallet of dwarf growing varieties that dramatically limited the amount of pruning maintenance. We also removed a significant portion of the existing sod and created large stack stones rings around the existing trees to eliminate the need for trimming

This yard included 2 beautiful, ancient camellias. We were able to prune and rejuvenate these beautiful old specimens, turning them into stunning elements in a brand new garden. We love utilizing original elements whenever possible, preserving memories and maintaining a common thread between old and new.
