Horticulture, business and art
Nick and I (Alex) started this slow gardening, eco conscious, horticulture forward landscaping business (affectionately knowing as Bluebird Growers) nearly 2 years ago! While Nick had originally started Bluebird Growers in 2014 as a small farming operation on the Northside of Jacksonville (growing beautiful perennials and organic vegetables starts for local institutions, garden centers and farms) we transitioned over the years, as our family grew, from farming to working with other landscapers to reimagining our own unique endeavor. And here we are!
Over the last 2 years we have had the pleasure and honor of designing, creating and installing well over 30+ gardens all around Jacksonville! From Fernandina Beach to the foot of the St. John’s River, from downtown historic Jacksonville to Atlantic Beach and beyond, there’s been no shortage of unique projects. Alongside Nick’s horticultural expertise, I’ve been able to add in my own unique talents by integrating my prior skillset, from my previous career owning a professional photography business, for well over a decade! (Fun fact: all of our photos were taken on 35mm & 120 film!) With a communication degree and a fine art minor in photography from Jacksonville University, my part of Bluebird is marketing, sharing, photographing and showcasing Nick’s hard design and install work in a beautiful way. (I also do all the other “fun business stuff” like website design, accounting, client communications, scheduling, taxes etc.)
Bluebird Growers has adopted the phrasing “Slow Gardening in the Bold South” because we focus on highly personalized designs, utilizing NE Florida friendly and native plants while using ecologically friendly practices. Our style can best be described as naturalistic, Florida friendly and arboretum’esque. Each design is focused on expanding and maximizing the useable living space for both clients AND local wildlife. Our designs have to look great and do something even greater. We’re honored to be stewards of the land and help the grander mission for a smarter approach to landscaping.
